Assistant U. S. Trade
Representative for South and Southwest Asia Douglas
Alan Hartwick, a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service with the rank
of Minister-Counselor, assumed his duties as the Assistant U.S. Trade
Representative in February, 2006.
Prior to coming to USTR, Ambassador Hartwick served as International
Advisor to the Commandant of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the
National
Defense University. From January until July 2005,
he led the State Department’s Tsunami Reconstruction Task Force charged with
international and interagency coordination of tsunami assistance to the affected
countries.
Mr.
Hartwick served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic
from 2001 to 2004. In 2001, he
served as senior advisor to the Director General of the Foreign Service and was
a National
Defense University’s Capstone Fellow. As Director, he headed the Office of
Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Brunei, and Singapore Affairs at the
State Department from 1997 to 2000.
He was the Counselor of Embassy for Economic and Science Affairs in
New Delhi
(1994-1997) and Economic Counselor in Kuala Lumpur (1990-1993). He has served in various other positions
in Africa, India and
Washington.
Mr.
Hartwick is fluent in French and Spanish, proficient in Lao, and speaks some
German and Italian. He holds a B.A.
in Government from the College of William and Mary, an M.A. in International
Economics from Washington State University, an M.A. in Applied Economics
and Development from Stanford University, and an M.S. (Distinguished
Graduate) in National Security Studies from the National War College. He is married to Regina Zuehlke-Hartwick
and they have two daughters.
Ambassador Hartwick enjoys running, scuba-diving, rugby and tennis.
