Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement

business meetingThe Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement (IGPE) leads the USTR's public outreach efforts to state and local governments, both small and large business and agricultural communities, labor, environmental and consumer groups.

IGPE works closely with stakeholders and the general public to advance the Administration's trade agenda, by building coalitions and developing strategic communications initiatives to implement U.S. trade policy.

IGPE is focused on improving the public's understanding of U.S. trade policies, initiatives and goals through continuous engagement with American businesses and consumers.

IGPE proactively engages with the community at-large to increase the understanding of trade benefits and the impact trade has on the lives of every-day Americans. This kind of outreach occurs, everyday at the USTR offices through meetings and conversion with groups and individuals across the country.

As the greeters for USTR, IGPE welcomes all Americans to share how their businesses are affected by trade and to share the increased benefits provided to local economies, small businesses and consumers through trade. IGPE encourages a continuing dailogue so the voices of the American public are incorporated into the administration's trade agenda.

IGPE also oversees the U.S. Trade Advisory Committee system. The U.S Trade Advisory Committees are an integral part of the trade negotiating process, providing advice and guidance in the construction of trade relations with nations around the world.

Lastly, harnessing new technologies and practices, the Office of IAPE has a strong on-line presence which includes a weekly newsletter, and other interactive elements that provide tools for citizens to actively engage with USTR. Through public events as well as activities on the web site USTR strives to build a strong and beneficial partnership with the public.
