09/13/2005

WASHINGTON - United States Trade Representative Rob Portman today applauded President Bush's announcement of his intent to nominate Karan K. Bhatia to be Deputy United States Trade Representative. Mr. Bhatia is currently the Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the Department of Transportation.

"I am pleased that the President has identified a highly qualified individual for consideration," said Portman. "Karan Bhatia will bring to USTR a rich background in the government, the private sector and academia. His proven skill in negotiating agreements around the world will be crucial in advancing the President's trade agenda to help open foreign markets to U.S. exports and level the playing field. Bhatia also has extensive legal experience which will be invaluable in his new position."
