USTR Schwab Praises Senate for Confirmation of Veroneau

WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab today applauded the Senate for the confirmation of John K. Veroneau to serve as Deputy United States Trade Representative.

Veroneau will join Deputies Peter F. Allgeier, USTR’s Geneva-based representative to the World Trade Organization, and Karan K. Bhatia, supervisor of U.S. trade relations with Asia and Africa, as well as labor, environment and trade building capacity building issues,

"I am very pleased to welcome John back to USTR," said Ambassador Schwab. "John brings considerable knowledge and experience to a critical portfolio at USTR, and he will continue to make vital contributions to U.S. global leadership in trade. I look forward to him rejoining our USTR team."

As Deputy United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Veroneau will lead U.S. trade negotiations and enforcement in Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. His responsibilities will include WTO and multilateral affairs, intergovernmental affairs and negotiations on intellectual property rights, services and investment, market access, and telecommunications.

Prior to his return to USTR, Veroneau was a Partner at a leading Washington, D.C. law firm. From 2003 to 2005, he served as USTR’s General Counsel, and served as Assistant USTR for Congressional Affairs from 2001 to 2003. Prior to that he served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of Defense. Veroneau’s experience also includes several positions on Capitol Hill, including Chief of Staff to Senator Susan M. Collins, Legislative Director to Senator Bill Frist, and Legislative Director to Senator William S. Cohen.

Veroneau received his Bachelor’s degree in English and a Law Degree from the University of Maine. He is a member of the Maryland Bar Association.
