Statement of USTR Spokesperson Neena Moorjani Regarding the WTO panel report on Softwood Lumber
08/30/2005

"As press has reported, a WTO panel found the International Trade Commission’s 2004 determination – known as its "section 129 determination" – to be entirely consistent with U.S. obligations under the WTO. The panel’s finding confirms that dumped and subsidized imports of softwood lumber from Canada threatened to materially injure the U.S. industry. However, because under WTO rules interim reports are provided to the parties on a confidential basis, we cannot go into detail on the report at this time. Despite this win, the United States believes that back and forth litigation won’t solve this 20 year old issue. The best course of action is to come to a negotiated solution and we look forward to the resumption of talks as soon as possible."
