WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business, and Economic Development, Mary Ng.

Ambassador Tai and Minister Ng acknowledged the close relationship between the two countries, highlighted by President Biden’s recent visit to Ottawa, Canada and meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau. In addition, Ambassador Tai and Minister Ng recognized that May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States and Asian Heritage Month in Canada.  They acknowledged these communities’ strength and essential contributions to American and Canadian societies.

Ambassador Tai and Minister Ng also discussed cooperation in multilateral fora, the ongoing consultations under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on certain Mexican energy and agricultural biotechnology measures that continue to threaten U.S. and Canadian investments and exports, and recent changes in Mexico’s mining law. Ambassador Tai and Minister Ng also discussed Canada’s proposed digital services tax. Ambassador Tai expressed her hope that the United States and Canada could work together on this issue that could unfairly impact U.S. businesses.

The two agreed to continued cooperation in addressing these and other issues ahead of the next USMCA Free Trade Commission meeting later this year.
